Gumtara Fort Travel Guide and Trek Details

Gumtara Fort

Gumtara Fort is a small-known hill fort which is found in the Thane district of Maharashtra. This locality is located within the Tungareshwar Sanctuary, and it is a popular spot among trekkers who want to have a peaceful trek, forest trails, and the scenic views in a surrounding other than the crowded trekking trails around the city of Mumbai.

Location and Elevation

The height of the Gumtara Fort is around 1,949 feet high above the sea level. It is located south of Takmak and is greatly covered by dense forest covers that make the approach scenic and it also involves great caution in covering the wildlife sanctuary grounds.

Historical Background

The fort was first mentioned in 1689 after Sambhaji Maharaj was arrested. It has over time been transferred to Mughal, Maratha and British armies, which is indicative of its tactical applicability in the local warfare.

Role During Maratha Period

The fort was an auxiliary in local wars under the Marathas, such as the Vasai expedition of 1737. The gradual structural degradation of the fort was also later increased by the civil wars that took place between the Marathas and British forces in 1780.

Current Situation of the Fort

By 1818, the bulk of outer defenses had been turned into ruins. As of today, the fort is mostly composed of the remnants of stones, fragmented ramparts, and foundations, and is not an ideal historical tourist spot but a historical one.

Trek Difficulty Level

The walk to the fort is said to be moderate to difficult. The forest trails, irregular beauty, and scrambling of rocks that Trekkers face demand high stamina and experience in trekking, particularly when it is the season of monsoon.

Trek Duration and Routes

It can be estimated that in most cases, it takes 2.5 to 4 hours to reach the top of Gumtara Fort. Time varies based on the climatic conditions, the speed at which one walks, and the paths taken across the sanctuary in the wooded pathways.

Key Structures on the Summit

Close to the gateway, one can see seven rock-cut water cisterns, which normally contain water until the month of February. The top is marked by the remains of a stone gateway, portions of ramparts, and a little shrine to a local deity.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to come and visit Gumtara Fort is between October and March when the weather is very pleasant and safe. Monsoon hikes would offer the beautiful scenery but they come with slippery paths and poor visibility in thick foresty parts.
