Overview of Varugad Fort

Varugad Fort is an ancient hill fort situated on the Maan Taluka of the Satara district in Maharashtra. The fort that rises between 3,000 and 3,160 feet is located in the Mahadev range that used to guard boundaries between the regions of Phaltan and Maan in history.

Geographic Setting

The fort is located at the very center of dry plateaus and rolling hills, where the views of Phaltan plains are impressive. Its hilly topography was of natural defensive advantage. Early Origins

There are ancient water cisterns that reveal that the fort was not built by Maratha. Nevertheless, as historically witnessed it was greatly restored and fortified in the seventeenth century in order to enhance its defense against the encroaching Mughal forces in the surrounding plains and trade routes.

Maratha Era Importance

It is assumed that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj strengthened the fort in the years 1674. Varugad Fort was a strategic location, and it would dictate the movement in the region. The fort and the adjacent settlements were guarded by a permanent force of about two hundred Gadkaris and sepoys.

British Period Events
